Firebase/Firestore rules left in test mode

Quick answer: Test-mode rules allow open reads and writes. Production rules should require auth and match the document owner.

Last updated October 14, 2026

Steps

  1. Open the Firebase console and check Firestore and Storage → Rules.
  2. Look for allow read, write: if true or a time-based test rule.
  3. Require request.auth != null and match request.auth.uid to the owner.
  4. Test the rules in the Rules Playground.

Why it matters

This is a common failure pattern in apps built quickly with AI coding tools. The steps above check your own app only. Never test apps you don't own.
